Civilian Conservation Corps Camps in Minnesota
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a work relief program administered through the U. S. Army from 1933 through 1942. Minnesota's 148 camps had over 70,000 workers and were spread throughout the state. Explore this map to view a selection of the camps.
George Newton and His Photographs

Iron Range Mines on the Cuyuna Range
The Cuyuna Range was made up of two narrow zones of hematite formations buried deep in northeast-central Minnesota. Many deposits also contained manganese, a valuable mineral used to harden steel. Learn about the underground and open pit mines on this range.
Iron Range Mines on the Mesabi Range
The Mesabi Range grew to be the largest and most productive iron range in the state’s history. The iron ore of the Mesabi was soft and powdery hematite that lay close to the surface, which made it easier and cheaper to dig out. Explore some Mesabi mines with this map.
Iron Range Mines on the Vermilion Range
The Vermilion Range is a narrow formation of banded iron ore made of chert, magnetite, and hematite. The iron ore on this range was hard, very high quality, and ideal for steelmaking. Use this map to explore the major mines of the range, located between the towns of Tower and Ely in Minnesota’s Arrowhead region.
