The Northfield Arts Guild was founded in 1959 by people wanting to create a place for community-based art making in theater, dance, music, literary and visual arts. More than 50 years later, the Arts Guild owns two buildings, produces more than 70 annual art events and conducts 30 weekly art classes. The Arts Guild also plays a leadership role in city-wide initiatives to promote Northfield as an arts destination. The Arts Guild on-site archive is extensive and open for public viewing. The Arts Guild's contributions to the Minnesota Digital Library contain a selection of documents from the first 10 years of the organization.
