The Melrose Area Historical Society was incorporated in 1987 to preserve, interpret, and disseminate information about the Melrose School District area. The Melrose Area Museum moved from two small locations to its present one, a former convent, in 1998. Refurbishment resulted in two floors of display space and one of storage. It displays and interprets thousands of artifacts, family histories, maps, pictures and documents. Among its many projects was the placing of a marker on the grave of Edwin Clark, "Father of Melrose." The Melrose Area Historical Society worked with the Minnesota Digital Library to digitize for the Minnesota Digital Library photographs and original letters from Edwin Clark to his wife, Ellen, and from her to Edwin from the 1850s and 1860s.
